Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup toor dal (or masoor dal) washed and soaked 15–20 min
  • 1 cup basmati rice washed and soaked 15–20 min
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp oil or ghee
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste

Equipment

  • Pressure cooker or pot

Method

  1. Wash and soak the dal and rice separately for about 15–20 minutes. Drain and keep aside.
  2. Heat oil or ghee in a pressure cooker or heavy pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle.
  3. Add drained dal and rice to the pot. Stir gently to mix with the oil and cumin.
  4. Add turmeric powder, salt, and water. Stir once to combine.
  5. Cover the pressure cooker and cook for about 3 whistles (or in a pot cover and simmer until rice and dal are soft, about 20 minutes).
  6. When pressure releases naturally, open and fluff gently with a fork. Serve hot dal rice on plates.

Notes

You may add vegetables like peas, carrots or spinach while cooking for extra nutrition. A small sprinkle of fresh coriander or a squeeze of lemon makes it more flavourful.
